Donnacha’s been playing the Uilleann Pipes since 1988 when he began lessons in Na Piobairi Uilleann. He got his first half set 1990. The chanter had intonation issues and through pure frustration he took lessons in reed making. From there he became more and more interested in how the instrument worked.

Uilleann pipes are iconic of traditional Irish music and emerged in the 19th C. from the pastoral pipes, which were traditionally played across Ireland and the British Isles (history here and here). By the 1960s there were very few players or makers left, but following a concerted effort to revive the tradition, they are now found worldwide.
