In 1973, four pipers from the western Mohawk Valley of New York State (Dr. William Forbes, Jim Clough, Tom Carl, and Frank Dugan, Jr.) created a new pipe band in Rome, NY.

The New York City Fire Department Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, a nonprofit organization, is composed entirely of either retired, or active New York City Firefighters. Prior to 9/11/01, our main source of income was derived from performing at parades, special concerts, volunteer apparatus dedications, etc. However, since 9/11, because of our dedication in providing dignity to the member and their families at over 500 funerals and memorial dedications, the Band has grown increasingly popular among the Department, and with that popularity, it has almost doubled in size.
