Wolney Highlanders is based in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A subdivision of Banda Marcial Wolney Aguiar (BMWA), it specialises in authentic Scottish pipe band repertoire.
History
According to the band’s published history, BMWA has combined Scottish bagpipes with brass and other marching band instruments since 1957. It was the second Brazilian marching band to introduce a Scottish pipe section in this way, following the Marine Corps marching band in 1951.
BMWA maintained friendly contact with Cristiano and Marcos Bicudo of São Paulo’s Banda Brasil Caledonia, formerly Scottish Link Pipe Band, and received their voluntary technical assistance.
Growing interest in dedicated Scottish pipe bands encouraged BMWA to establish a separate pipe band. Although it already owned Scottish bagpipes, suitable drums were difficult to obtain because of import costs. In August 2013, a complete set of used HTS-200 drums was secured, enabling the creation of Wolney Highlanders.
The Highlanders’ formation in 2013 is distinct from the parent marching band’s history dating to 1957.
