The band was founded in the 1970s, in the area of Dundee, called Fintry.

The bands first practice was held at the school hall in Fintry. The current pipe major took over the band following the his father’s passing, but both men have done a lot for the band over the years.

When the band was founded they were called The Fintry Pipe Band, in 2002 P/M Richard Smith decided to change the bands name to The Mains of Fintry Pipe Band with this change the band travelled to the folk festival in Bitburg, Germany, where they played a concert for about 600 people, as well as parading in front of nearly 2000 locals and tourists, the band returned the following year with the added support of the Mains of Fintry Folk Duo which consisted of friend of the pipe majors, and the sister of one of the pipers.
