Sønderborg Pipes and Drums, or SPAD for short, is a Danish pipe band that loves to play Scottish bagpipe music.

The band was founded in 2003 and today has over 20 musicians on bagpipes, snare drums, tenor and bass drum and 3 dancers. In addition, we have a large number of helpers, called SPAD Support, who help with practical tasks during our many jobs around the country. Without them, it just didn’t work at all.

We play the traditional Scottish bagpipe music and dance traditional Highland Dance, which you can also experience at the Edinburgh Tattoo, but in addition we also love to break a little out of these frameworks and also play music from other genres. From rock to classical, even children’s songs can be found in our set list. We perform both as a big band for full music, as a small band with 3-5 men, or as a solo piper. We also play with others such as brass bands, symphony orchestras, rock bands, choirs and soloists.

Our jobs are diverse and range from ring riding processions to weddings, town parties, concerts, tattoos and corporate events. We have even played on a jet plane at 30,000 feet on the way from Esbjerg to Aberdeen. So we experience very different things and we love to share all these experiences together with our friends in the band.

Our uniform is 100% traditional Scottish. That is that our members wear a real hand-sewn kilt from Scotland, made in the pattern of the Scottish Clan Donald. The rest of the uniform is also like the original.

For many years, SPAD has been a regular part of the city’s cultural life and our work often extends far beyond the municipal border. Yes, even far beyond the national border. Thus we have played in both Germany and Scotland on several occasions.
