Wearing the MacTavish tartan, our band performs all over Northern Utah, and competes in the Western US, Canada, the United Kingdom, and we have attended the World Pipe Band Championships held in Glasgow Scotland.

Alexandria’s pipe band can trace its beginning to 1971, when a small group of pipers and drummers began playing together in Alexandria. Fortunately, the Tourist Council, and several prominent businessmen, took an interest in the group, and were instrumental in obtaining city sponsorship for a pipe band as an appropriate way to celebrate Alexandria’s strong Scottish heritage. The City of Alexandria Pipes and Drums was formally organized early in 1972.

The band was formed in late 1983 as an off shoot of the Fairfax County Firefighter’s Emerald Society which was originally organized in April of 1983. The goal was to emulate the FDNY Emerald Society, that of having a Pipe Band component to the social organization. Bill Schumm, President of the Emerald Society, and Ed Snyder, a member, met with John D. “Zim” Zimmerman to learn what was involved with starting a pipe band. “Zim” was, at the time, the Drum Major for the Washington Scottish Pipe Band A.K.A. The Saint Andrews Society Pipes and Drums. Zim believed in our cause and became the Drum Major for the new band. He also taught bass drumming, how to march, attack tunes and how to properly wear the uniform.

The Elliott Bay Pipe Band of Seattle is a highland bagpipe and drum band that performs traditional and contemporary Celtic music. The band is deeply committed to achieving the highest possible level of musicianship. Pursuing this goal requires a focused commitment from all of our members. At the same time, we strive to balance work, families, and having fun. Under the musical leadership of Pipe Major Tyrone Heade, Elliott Bay draws adult and youth musicians from all over the greater Puget Sound region.

The Kenmore & District Pipe Band came into being in the year 2001 when a group of people with a common appreciation for Scottish piping and drumming gathered in order to enhance that appreciation by improving their musical skills. Some of these people brought previous piping and drumming experience to the group; others were beginners. The group included all levels of ability, all ages, both genders and people from a broad spectrum of trades and professions. Inevitably, it was not long until performing in the public became one of the group’s activities.
