Pipers and drummers from the Central Scotland Police band have been named as top of their class at this year’s World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow.

Marching out to a crowd of 91,000 and feeling no fear — that was the experience for 16 members of the Mains of Fintry Pipe Band as they represented the music of Europe at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics last weekend (writes Lisa Trainer).

 

As the crowd gasped in delight to the sound of the pipes and drums, the 16 Dundee-based band members savoured the atmosphere and enjoyed every moment of their time in the stadium.

Muscians from all over the world descended on Glasgow today to kick off the annual Piping Live festival. Two hundred bands are taking part - many hoping to be crowned winners of the World Pipe Band Championships.

It is a scene more familiar to the capital in August but this week over 8,000 pipers are in Glasgow. They have come from all over the world to celebrate one of Scotland’s most noteworthy traditions.

International recording star Anthony Kearns, one of the founding members of the PBS Super Group, the Irish Tenors, has contracted the Delta Police Pipe Band to host a solo concert in Delta this fall.

Kearns will appear with his accompanist for a single concert at the South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen on Monday, November 3. A contingent of the Delta Police Pipe Band will also provide a segment of the entertainment.

DUNDEE'S Mackenzie Caledonian Pipe Band, which has a Broughty Ferry base, has won the 2008 European Championships, held at Lisburn, Northern Ireland.

The local band was one of 23 in the contest, and their victory means that they add the European title to the British Championships which they won in July.

If they are victorious in Glasgow, the band will be promoted in the rankings to Grade 2 from Grade 3A.

The MacKenzie Pipe Band was formed in 1918 at the end of the First World War and its members largely comprised returning ex-servicemen.
